Lisandro Martínez’s jab at Man United chiefs: Carragher and Rooney react

Lisandro Martínez, Manchester United defender, hit out at the club’s hierarchy after the 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid and the backlash is already coming. Jamie Carragher labelled his comments “awful”, arguing the player should look at himself because of a “really poor” start to the season.

Carragher also expects the episode to dominate headlines for days, adding that fans often enjoy any clash with “the suits” or the “guys upstairs”. Wayne Rooney went further, branding the remarks “disrespectful”.

Martínez, who is out of contract at season’s end, said he expected more from “upstairs” and singled out technical director Jason Wilcox, pointing to the latest transfer window for failing to improve options at left-back and up front. Sky Sports notes United spent £155m on four major summer signings after finishing third in the Premier League last season.
