Mamadou Sangaré turned down top clubs for Brentford
In a Sky Sports interview, the Brentford midfielder says he chose development over big-name Europe moves
Mamadou Sangaré, the Brentford midfielder, admitted he could have been playing Champions League football this week, but turned down interest from elite clubs to make a club-record move to Brentford despite the Bees having no European football this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he didn’t name the suitors: “Yeah it’s true… But I’m not going to give any names, out of respect.” Sangaré said his key priority was figuring out where he could progress, explaining that “Brentford was the best place for my development.” He added that the fact a coach “really wanted me” mattered in his decision.
His stock was high after a major campaign with RC Lens, where he starred as they finished Ligue 1 runners-up and won the French Cup. At 24, he also made the Ligue 1 Team of the Year, pipping Paris Saint-Germain, as Sky Sports noted.
