Manchester City: Financial Times reveals HMRC probe opened in 2018
The Financial Times says HMRC looked into City over possible tax-reduction structures, with no action taken and no formal close.
The Manchester City is back under the spotlight as the Financial Times reports that UK tax authorities (HMRC) opened an investigation in 2018 to check whether the club could have used complex structures to reduce taxes.
Probe that never ended
The outlet says the investigation started after, in late 2018, Der Spiegel published internal emails from the club. Citing “people familiar with the matter”, the investigation would not focus on alleged deliberate fraud, and it was never formally closed—while HMRC has not taken any measures against City.
The club did not respond to AFP when contacted on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the wider financial case also continues: at the end of September, an independent commission found the club guilty of “serious” breaches of Premier League financial rules for the 2009-2018 period. City denies the findings and has lodged an appeal.
