Manchester City: MPs ask HMRC to clarify tax implications

The Treasury Committee writes to HMRC after the Premier League probe, including possible review of taxes and national insurance over nine seasons.

The Manchester City case is moving beyond the football ruling as the Treasury Committee has written to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to ask about the tax implications stemming from the Premier League investigation.

As reported by Sky Sports, HMRC could examine whether City paid the correct amount of tax and national insurance during the nine seasons covered by the independent commission’s guilty findings on serious Premier League financial-rule breaches. In the letter, Dame Meg Hillier MP asks JP Marks, the HMRC permanent secretary, whether the department has received an unredacted version of the Premier League’s report and requests “reassurance” that HMRC understands the public-interest importance of the matter. She also asks for an overview of HMRC’s current work relating to football clubs.

Hillier also says she is interested in any common taxation issues, including how remuneration is treated, and how HMRC is tackling them. City deny wrongdoing and plan to appeal the verdict, which they must submit by Friday.
