Manuel Oviedo Martínez dies: Córdoba CF president in its rise

The Córdoba fanbase is in mourning after the death of Manuel Oviedo Martínez, former president of Córdoba CF, born in Córdoba in December 1939.

His spell at the club is especially tied to the 1998-1999 season, when financial problems and instability hit hard. Sport reports that even a lock-in in the dressing rooms took place over unpaid wages during the early part of the league campaign, leading to Oviedo taking charge.

Promotion in Cartagena

On 30 June 1999, at the Cartagonova, Pepe Escalante’s side — who had taken over from Pedro Campos — earned promotion to Segunda División against Cartagena. The match marked the end of the club’s long, nearly two-decade wait for a return to professional football.

The club also said the funeral will be held this Saturday at 10:30 at the Church of San Nicolás, and shared a statement offering condolences and praising Oviedo’s legacy.
