Marc Pubill arrives to the clash with Espanyol with extra motivation: Atlético play this Saturday at RCDE Stadium (14:00) and face the club where he was raised. The World Cup winner, who joined Atlético in the summer of 2025, has become a key part of Simeone’s defense, partnering Romero.
Pubill spent six years in Espanyol’s youth system, but in 2017—still a cadet—he was released for being considered too short. After that, he broke through at Levante and Almería, helped by his 1.90-metre frame, before earning his move to Madrid.
His path isn’t unique in rojiblancos: Mario Hermoso also came from Espanyol, joining in July 2019 for almost €30 million.
