Maroan seals Euskal Herria Txapela final as Athletic beat Real Sociedad

Athletic claimed the Euskal Herria Txapela at Anoeta by beating Real Sociedad 1-0 thanks to Maroan, who nodded home in the 59th minute. The final, played on the first Friday of October, also acts as a prelude to the next Liga meetings where both clubs will swap venues.

Header goal decides it

According to MARCA, Johaneko shaped the early game and Real’s first goal before the 20-minute mark was ruled out after a handball just before the shot. Before half-time Maroan hit the crossbar, and after Terzic made three changes at 58’, Athletic struck from a set piece: Maroan headed the free-kick and put the tie in their hands.

Athletic lift their 10th edition title

Athletic celebrated the competition’s tenth edition, leading the winners’ list with 4 titles, one more than Osasuna’s 3. Real’s last Txapela dates back to 2020, a match held without spectators due to COVID restrictions. Luis Bestard was the referee and booked Rincón (54’) and Gorrotxategi (60’).
