Michael Carrick fires back at Bruno Fernandes after United’s 4-1 loss

Manchester United’s dressing room tensions boiled over after a 4-1 loss at Como in the Champions League league phase, with Michael Carrick replying firmly to Bruno Fernandes’ criticism of his tactics.

Fernandes argued that the plan was not to press man-to-man: “C’était une décision du staff de ne pas faire de pressing individuel…” He added that handing too much possession to opponents helps them gain confidence, and that once United regain the ball, both legs and decision-making suffer.

No room for debate

Carrick answered just as bluntly: “Quel que soit le système de jeu… si vous ne courez pas vers l’avant… vous ne gagnez pas… la manière… n’est pas acceptable.”

Asked about reports that he could be under pressure, he said he is not focusing on his future, but on the blame: “Je dois présenter mes excuses aux supporters…” This Sunday, Manchester United will try to steady the ship away at Bournemouth in the Premier League.
