Michael Carrick opens door to January signings at Man Utd
Man Utd’s boss says January is a target for defensive reinforcements after the club’s summer focus elsewhere.
Michael Carrick, head coach of Manchester United, says the club will try to strengthen in the January transfer window to improve its defence. The plan is part of a wider effort to rebuild the back line over the next year.
Defence comes first
Carrick admits he was left short after the summer window, and Luke Shaw’s injury has now highlighted United’s lack of options. Ayden Heaven has been used out of position at left-back.
Lisandro Martínez added fuel to the debate this week by publicly criticising the hierarchy for insufficient summer investment. Sky Sports also notes that United spent £163m, while promoted sides Hull (£173m) and Ipswich (£211m) outspent them despite United qualifying for the Champions League.
What United prioritised
United’s summer focus was the midfield rebuild, bringing in Youri Tielemans (£35m), Andrey Santos (£50m) and Carlos Baleba (£70m) for a combined £155m, rather than addressing depth at left-back and up front. Carrick says there is a desire to be active for any opportunities that could open up in January, amid mounting pressure after a five-game winless run.
