Mikel Arteta says his conscience is clear over Man City charges
Arsenal boss insists he’s clear after the ruling on City, as his club appeals and he says he won’t comment further until it’s resolved.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said his conscience is clear over Manchester City’s Premier League rule breaches, during his time as an assistant at the club. He was asked directly about whether he feels clean after the decision, in what was his first news conference since the ruling.
Arteta worked under Pep Guardiola between 2016 and 2019, overlapping with the nine seasons in which City have been found to have broken rules, including alleged disguised secret funding of more than £830m. City have appealed the independent commission’s ruling, so the process is still ongoing.
Clear answer, then restraint
In his press conference, Arteta tried to steer questions away from commentary. He said it’s important to respect the process and timelines and that he and the club’s position is not to add further comments until the appeal is fully resolved.
Asked if he had spoken to Guardiola, Arteta said: “I prefer not to answer those questions.” He also added that he is “100%” confident the Premier League remains the best league in the world.
Arsenal turn to Leeds
Arsenal, three points behind league leaders City, host fifth-placed Leeds at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
