Newcastle in crisis mode: pressure rises after Aston Villa defeat
The Magpies head to Crystal Palace on Sunday with three losses in four matches and just eight points from seven games.
Newcastle United are heading into Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace (14:00 BST) after a home defeat to Aston Villa that drew boos at St James’ Park. The result leaves the club trying to end a run of three losses in four matches.
The worrying trend stretches back further: Newcastle have won only one of their last five Premier League games and, after seven rounds, sit on eight points. Their recent setbacks include back-to-back 4-1 away defeats at Leeds United on 14 September and at Coventry City on 12 October.
A young squad, heavy pressure
Former Newcastle defender John Anderson warns: “The pressure will seriously be on if they don’t get a result at Palace.” Chris Sutton, who won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1994-95, describes the team under Matthias Jaissle as “chaotic”, adding that they lack creativity in the final third and are vulnerable at the back.
BBC Sport also highlights the wider context: the summer saw major sales including Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for over £69m and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for up to £100m. Newcastle are also without a clean sheet in each of their last 16 games across all competitions, and they have managed just one shot on target versus Villa—at home—their lowest since August 2024.
