Oliver Kahn questions Germany’s goalkeeper rotation, backs Marc ter Stegen

After Jürgen Klopp’s first four Germany matches, Kahn says the No. 1 should be Marc ter Stegen and calls the plan “unfortunate”.

Oliver Kahn, Germany’s goalkeeping legend, took aim at the rotation Jürgen Klopp is using in the national team after his first four matches. In that run, Marc André ter Stegen was only picked once, starting the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands, while Alexander Nübel played the 0-1 loss to Greece and Jan Urbig handled the remaining two games: a 2-0 win vs Serbia and a 0-0 draw against Greece.

Rotation under scrutiny

Kahn said the setup “is a shame” and argued that if anyone needed minutes, Klopp should have given them to the man he considers the current No. 1: “Marc ter Stegen”. The 86-cap former keeper also questioned the idea that a national side “shouldn’t be for giving minutes to everyone,” as he told Sky/RTL.

From Kahn’s perspective, the bigger issue is that Germany has a clear reference point in Ter Stegen, who at 34 has 45 caps, and who, in this window, has already been used in the early games.
