Pablo Marín returns to action with Real Sociedad under Matarazzo
The Rioja midfielder played his first minutes of 2026-27 vs Athletic after two preseason muscle injuries, building his role for Matarazzo.
Pablo Marín is already an option for Real Sociedad coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: the Riojano played his first minutes of the 2026-27 season against Athletic, in the ‘Euskal Herria Txapela’ final. He came off a double muscular setback in preseason—first an issue in his right hamstring and then a relapse—so he missed friendlies and the opening weeks of the campaign.
The academy product, who scored the penalty in April’s Copa win for Real, began rebuilding for the new calendar. On September 17, vs Bournemouth in Europa League, he was already in the squad list, though without minutes. Those came against Athletic, where he was used on the right wing and tried to get into attacking positions, while also helping defensively.
After the match, Marín said: “I really wanted to play, but I’ve felt more tired than usual.” He added that it’s better for the injury to happen early, and that he’s now ready to contribute wherever the manager needs him, with his versatility offering “solutions” to the staff.
