Patri Guijarro celebrates her goal, but wants more pressure vs USA (0-2)
Guijarro scored at three minutes as Spain beat the USA 0-2 at Audi Field, but said the team could have pressed better.
Patri Guijarro, the FC Barcelona midfielder, was happy with her long-range strike that put Spain ahead against the United States just three minutes in, though she said things weren’t “all rosy” after the 0-2 win at Audi Field in Washington.
The player underlined that starting with the lead is “something good” and pointed out that “for luck it went in.” Still, she felt Spain’s high press didn’t work in parts of the match and argued they should have been more aggressive to “win the ball a bit more in their half.” She also noted that when Spain managed to find possessions close to combinations—getting their number 10s behind the Americans’ midfield—they were able to keep the ball better.
In the same game, Eva Navarro added Spain’s second goal at 14 minutes. After instructions from Sonia Bermúdez, Navarro played on the right side as a winger, tasked to “run at them and cross” and to shoot when she had the chance, after receiving an “incredible” pass from Salma.
