Paul Merson: Arsenal won’t beat Bayern after Brighton scare
Paul Merson says the Brighton loss shook Arsenal, and they revert to an efficient style heading into the Champions League vs Bayern.
In a column for Sky Sports, Paul Merson says Arsenal’s defeat to Brighton And Hove Albion “scared” them and pushed them to “go back to being an efficient machine.” The former player argues that after winning the league, the team’s approach changed following that result.
Merson links the shift to what he expects from Arsenal now: limiting goals conceded and creating an opportunity to score, which he connects to their narrow win over Nottingham Forest.
Stopgap before Bayern
He adds that he doesn’t think Arsenal will beat Bayern München in the Champions League on Wednesday. Merson also claims other teams have figured out how to block Arsenal—sit back, wait to be hit, and prevent wingers from driving forward.
