Puado trains with the squad and targets return after the international break
Sport reports Espanyol captain Javi Puado is progressing from his injury and could be available after the international break.
Javi Puado, Espanyol’s captain and striker, has a boost for the days ahead: according to Sport, the forward’s recovery from the injury he suffered last January against Levante has progressed to the point where he is back training with the group ahead of the period after the international break.
The problem happened during a game at the Ciutat de València. Puado had been on the pitch for only four minutes when he had to leave the field. Tests confirmed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and he subsequently underwent surgery. Sport also adds that, back in October 2025, he had suffered a sprain in the same joint that time without needing an operation.
Back on track
Working with the medical staff and the coaching team, Puado has been managing training loads and risk as he rebuilds. The intention, Sport says, is for him to be available after the national team break, though with the usual need to adapt to the match rhythm and sensations.
Options in attack
The article underlines that Puado’s value to Espanyol goes beyond goals. He is described as a committed player who also contributes in defensive work and who has a leadership role in the dressing room.
Why his return matters
Sport recalls his Second Division impact: 14 goals in 2020-21 and 17 in 2023-24, including the two decisive strikes in the home return match against Oviedo in the promotion play-off (2-0). In his top-flight seasons, Sport notes 12 goals in 2024-25 and two in 2025-26 before the injury.
With his return, Manolo González has more attacking alternatives. Roberto Fernández is currently in form with six goals and was called up by the senior national team, but Kike García is out after being operated in August on the right biceps femoris tendon.
Sport also flags another potential recovery: Andoni Gorosabel, who joined Espanyol this summer from Athletic but arrived without match rhythm, is expected to be closer to full fitness after the league pause.
