Rayo-Athletic: LaLiga says the suspended game won’t restart on Sunday
The match is kept off the schedule this Sunday, forcing Athletic to juggle dates ahead of their 21 October clash.
LaLiga has told Rayo and Athletic that the suspended match won’t restart this Sunday. The league informed both clubs that it “cannot be played either during today or tomorrow Sunday”, even though both sides had intended to stage it immediately.
Athletic’s players and staff were waiting for the decision at their concentration hotel when they learned there was no possibility of playing on Sunday, and the squad returned to Bilbao. The initial plan was to play right away—likely behind closed doors—but the necessary agreement between sporting authorities and security officials wasn’t reached.
The “sine die” postponement complicates the calendar, especially for Athletic, who already have a delayed game against Levante. That fixture is scheduled for 21 October at Ciutat de València, right in a week that also includes European matches.
As for rescheduling Rayo-Athletic, unless it is moved to Tuesday or Wednesday, the plan would follow the same approach used for Levante-Athletic, with the game slotted into European dates. The available continental midweek slots before the Christmas break are 4 November, 25 November and 9 December, though LaLiga and the RFEF have not yet set the terms; it still looks like it will be behind closed doors.
