Rio Ngumoha, 18 years old: sparks Liverpool’s Villarreal comeback
Liverpool won 4-3 vs Villarreal in the Champions League with Ngumoha starring on two assists, while renewal talks continue until 2028.
Rio Ngumoha was 18 years and 52 days old when he made Champions League history for Liverpool, becoming the youngest player for the club to score or assist in the competition. The winger then made the difference in a dramatic 4-3 comeback win over Villarreal.
He was taken off in the 74th minute and as Bradley Barcola came on, Anfield repeatedly chanted “Rio, Rio, Rio”. After the match, Ngumoha summed up his approach to Amazon Prime: “Whenever I get the ball… I believe in myself to do it. I’ll just keep going and be ruthless.”
Liverpool were two goals down for much of the first half, but Ngumoha turned the tide. After Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back, Ngumoha provided a lofted pass that Ronald Araujo met for the equaliser. In the second half, he out-maneuvered Sergi Cardona to set up Mac Allister for the lead.
His impact wasn’t just narrative: 12 touches in the opposition box, 7 of 8 dribbles completed and two crucial assists. Head coach Andoni Iraola praised his attitude and increased minutes “endurance-wise”, insisting the young winger is still developing. Contract talks are ongoing: Ngumoha signed in September 2025—weeks after turning 17—tying him to 2028, with negotiations now aimed at more lucrative terms.
