Ronald Araujo at Liverpool: buy option set at £47.2m

On a loan from Barcelona, he has started 8 of 10 games with Iraola; Liverpool can sign him this summer for £47.2m.

Ronald Araujo has become a key piece for Liverpool as the club holds a £47.2m option to buy him at the end of the season. The Uruguay defender has started 8 of Liverpool’s 10 games under Andoni Iraola, with six appearances at right-back and four at centre-back.

His recent impact has included his first goal for Liverpool: a header against LASK last week. He also provided a backheel assist for Dominik Szoboszlai in the match vs Atletico Madrid.

A crisis, and a response

Liverpool’s need has been shaped by injuries: Conor Bradley has been out since January with a knee problem, while Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined until the November international break with a muscle injury. Araujo is leaning into the opportunity, including taking English lessons, while Iraola pointed to how quickly he adapted to the role.

Summer calls

Araujo joined on a season-long loan from Barcelona, where last season he was granted leave to prioritise his mental health. On his future, he stayed cautious when asked: “It’s very early to talk about these things.” With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez’ deals expiring this summer, sporting director Julian Ward will have key decisions to make.
