Rubén de la Barrera on the edge after Las Palmas’ Son Moix loss
With just 1 point from the last 12 games, Las Palmas’ coach is under pressure: if he’s not sacked this week, it will be decided vs Castellón.
Las Palmas coach Rubén de la Barrera is now in serious trouble after the team’s defeat at Son Moix. The result leaves him with only 1 point from their last 12 matches, putting his position in doubt. If he isn’t dismissed this week, his future would be decided against Castellón.
Asked in his press conference whether he would understand a sacking, De la Barrera replied: "En el fútbol lo entiendo todo". MARCA argues the issues go well beyond the coach, pointing to poor planning by sporting director Luis Helguera and a squad that hasn’t improved compared with last season.
The imbalance stretches further
The sale of Horkas shifted the goalkeeping role to Caro, with errors highlighted—especially in build-up from the back. The club also let go of academy player Killane. Meanwhile, the exits of Mika Mármol and Sergio Barcia weren’t properly covered, with Álex Suárez and Herzog stepping in as starters but lacking a specialist profile for playing out and struggling with a higher line.
Injuries and signings without impact
This summer, seven new players arrived, yet only Iván Jaime is seen as truly decisive. Andrés and Bonfanti haven’t convinced, Acimovic debuted against Mallorca, and Opoku hasn’t even made his debut. Sergio Ruiz suffered an injury at the end of August.
There’s also been no permanent left-back replacement after Christian moved to Cádiz. De la Barrera tried up to five options before turning to Adrián. On top of that, a wave of injuries—Marvin, Clemente, Jesé and Sandro, plus last season’s absences like Recoba, Viti, Ale García and Cedeño—has left the team short on solutions.
With few alternatives, De la Barrera has leaned on youth: debuts for Elías Romero, Adrián and Rafa Cruz, alongside continuity for Pezzolesi and Iñaki.
