Sam Hutchinson returns at 37 with Farnham Town after health scare

Sam Hutchinson, the former Chelsea and AFC Wimbledon player, is preparing to take the field for Farnham Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup at the age of 37—almost 19 years after making his Chelsea debut.

Chelsea dream, injury and regret

According to BBC Sport, Hutchinson worked his way through the Chelsea academy, debuted at 17 under Jose Mourinho, and later played under Carlo Ancelotti as well. He also helped set up a goal for Frank Lampard and was in Munich when Chelsea won the Champions League for the first time in 2012.

The turning point came when a chronic knee issue threatened to end his career before it properly started. Hutchinson was diagnosed with a problem in his right knee after a serious injury during a reserve match against Aston Villa, and he was forced to make the gut-wrenching decision to retire at 21 in 2010 after struggling to recover.

He later spoke openly about what followed. “Unless you get help, you never know how bad you are,” Hutchinson told BBC Sport, adding that mental struggles can’t be solved by staying silent.

After treatment at the Priory and finally seeing his knee repaired, he returned in December 2011 to re-sign for Chelsea, though injuries continued and he made just six senior appearances for the club.

Heart scare and a new start

BBC Sport also recounts a major health scare during his time at AFC Wimbledon. After scoring at Grimsby, Hutchinson said he felt his chest tightening and quickly got worse, and the team coach was diverted to a hospital in Nottingham. Tests confirmed he had suffered a heart attack.

He described how a blocked artery branch was 75% obstructed, how he received a stent, and that there was no need for a defibrillator.

With his recovery complete, he was later cleared to train, extended his stay at Wimbledon, and then left the club at 36. Now, Hutchinson has signed a two-year contract with non-league Farnham Town, and is back in competitive football in pursuit of a dream he feared was gone for good.
