Sarina Wiegman extends England deal through after Euro 2029

The coach, in charge since September 2021, commits beyond the 2029 Euros after leading England to multiple Euro titles.

Sarina Wiegman, England’s head coach, has agreed a contract extension that keeps her in the job until after the Euro 2029 tournament—with the next challenge being how to sustain the level of the “Lionesses 2.0” era as cracks start to show. Wiegman took over in September 2021, saying she had come to “bring the next level”, and then delivered two more European titles and a global silver: she won the Euros in 2017 with the Netherlands and then won again with England in 2022 and 2025.

Transition under pressure

England’s development this year has been more uneven. Seven players who started the match against world champions Spain in June also featured in the Euro 2022 final against Germany, and that 4-0 defeat in Mallorca exposed the gap to the world’s best. It also forced England into two play-off rounds to reach next summer’s World Cup: they dealt with the first hurdle by beating Greece this month and are set for games against Ukraine—who they have beaten twice already in 2026.

Wiegman’s hand is also shaped by age. Defensive leaders Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood will be 37 and 36 by Euro 2029, while Leah Williamson and Keira Walsh will be 32. Key names such as Alessia Russo and Georgia Stanway will also be nearing 30, which makes finding successors even more urgent.

Evolving the squad

Ellen White, England’s record goalscorer, argued that the team has to keep evolving and can’t keep trying to win “in the same ways all the time”. Rachel Brown-Finnis pointed to Wiegman’s willingness to bring in players without caps before, saying Wiegman looks across the spectrum at who is on form and who can add to the squad.

On BBC Radio 5 Live, Steph Houghton said Wiegman has been changing things, noting that Lexi Potter came into the last camp for her debut and is now a regular starter for Chelsea. Wiegman has handed debuts to 24 players during her tenure, but only Lauren James, Hannah Hampton and Lucia Kendall have become established starters. BBC Sport highlighted these issues as Wiegman’s contract runs beyond the next three-year window.
