Sergio Carranza explains why Real Madrid-Sevilla didn’t get replays

In Sunday’s 4-1, Carranza backs the “editorial decision” after a possible Konaté foul and an Arda Güler incident not reviewed.

The controversial Real Madrid vs Sevilla (4-1) from last Sunday is still making headlines for two moments: Arda Güler not being sent off for a supposed elbow on Peque when it was 0-0, and a possible foul by Konaté on Ure before the second goal, scored by Kylian Mbappé, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

The key: cameras and ball focus

In ‘El Partidazo de COPE’, LaLiga’s broadcast production lead Sergio Carranza said the match was covered by 26 cameras, with 15 using tight framing. His argument was that all of them prioritize tracking the ball, and for the Güler incident he said: “the ball is about 30 meters away, at least.”

When asked whether they could have shown that sequence, Carranza stated that it “could have been considered,” but that “at the time we decided not to show it and to show the goal,” because the referee had already interpreted it and play continued. He also insisted there was no directive to hide or show replays.

“If VAR stops, we’d look”

On the Konaté moment, he stressed that the choice of replays and content is up to the production team, and that with a VAR stop for a review they “would have seen it and looked for it”.
