Sevilla vs CTA dispute: VAR wouldn’t step in on Güler incident

The CTA admitted a mistake behind the 2-0 after Konaté fouled Robbie Ure, but defended VAR’s non-intervention on Güler vs Peque.

Sevilla took its complaints to the CTA after Real Madrid-Sevilla, with the controversy centered on Arda Güler with Peque and the codazo de Güler a Peque with no ball in between. As reported by MARCA, the refereeing body said it had no images to judge the action’s intensity, which is why VAR did not step in.

Las Rozas meeting

The meeting between Sevilla president José María del Nido Carrasco and CTA head Fran Soto at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas didn’t cool things down. Sevilla disagree: they argue the rules require a red card for the mere intent to strike, and they also question the intensity threshold applied.

For the 2-0, the CTA admits there was a foul by Konaté on Robbie Ure and calls it a field error. Still, it claims the VOR room couldn’t correct it because it judged that the Scottish striker didn’t reach the ball and that it was a second phase—something Sevilla rejects, arguing the infringement was where the play started.

On penalties, the CTA says Peque’s fall against Cucurella wasn’t clear and obvious, though it adds that if it had been given live it wouldn’t have been overturned. For the penalty that made it 3-0 involving Kylian Mbappé, the CTA defends that there was enough contact, while Sevilla frames it as the main referee’s exclusive call.
