Sporting kick-starts their injury plan: El Molinón gets hybrid turf
Gijón’s club overhauls El Molinón’s pitch after injury concerns and targets a hybrid-turf debut before 9 November.
Sporting de Gijón has started its plan to tackle injuries by overhauling the pitch at El Molinón with hybrid grass. As reported by MARCA, the club’s executive president José Riestra and coach Nicolás Larcamón held an emergency meeting in El Molinón, putting on the table the “accumulation of factors” behind the long list of absences.
Works after the match
The first step will be a full transformation of the venue’s turf. The club plans the work after the home game this coming Sunday against Albacete, aiming to have it finished before Valladolid visit Gijón on 9 November, using three consecutive away trips in their calendar.
Stability for the historic ground
From that date, El Molinón will switch to a setup with a percentage of synthetic grass, with the aim of improving stability. The approach follows the hybrid model already used at the Escuela de Fútbol de Mareo and is intended to help reduce the injury problem.
