Steven Gerrard hits out at Man City, calling for an example

On The Overlap, Gerrard says he’s accepted never winning the Premier League after the season-ending incident.

Steven Gerrard, ex-Liverpool and a former Manchester City player, lashed out and called for an “example” to be set over what he described as the situation surrounding City. Speaking on The Overlap, the former midfielder said he is “NOT someone” who would claim he should accept a Premier League medal—or want one from them.

A wider impact

Gerrard stressed that he has “accepted the fact” he has never won the Premier League, and also “accepted the incident” that happened to him at the end of that season. He added that he has heard many City players, fans and well-known supporters argue that those moments “can’t be taken away” from them.

He then pushed back, asking what about the wider “memories” the episode may have spoiled for everyone else during a “nine- or ten-year period”, and specifically referenced Tottenham, United, Everton, bottom-of-the-table sides and teams involved in cup competitions. He also said former City players, current players, the owners and everyone connected to City should consider what others may have potentially “stolen” from them. (Fabrizio Romano)
