Teresa Abelleira signs for Atlético until June 2027

Joins on a free transfer after six seasons at Real Madrid, with Atlético saying she’ll undergo knee arthroscopy soon.

Teresa Abelleira became a new player for Atlético de Madrid on Wednesday, with a deal running until June 30, 2027, after finishing her contract with Real Madrid. She arrives as a free agent following six seasons in the white shirt and at the final stage of recovery from a knee injury.

Born in Pontevedra and developed through Deportivo de La Coruña’s youth system, she rose through Spain’s national team ranks and with Real Madrid featured in 126 matches and scored 10 goals. She won the 2023 World Cup in Australia and the 2024 Nations League.

Surgery to optimize recovery

The problem dates back to a Spain camp in 2025, when she suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament with damage to the outer meniscus in her left knee. Her last match was February 21, 2025; she returned to training in March 2026 but didn’t play again for Real Madrid.

Atlético says that, after a medical assessment with a knee specialist, “in the coming days” Abelleira will undergo knee arthroscopy to optimize her recovery and return to competition in the best conditions. Once fully fit, she will work under David González.
