The Friedkin Group weighs selling Everton control stake
Everton’s owner says it’s open to new investment and a sale of control, with no timeline but hopes for this season.
The Friedkin Group, Everton’s owner, has confirmed it is exploring the sale of a controlling stake in the club less than two years after taking over from Farhad Moshiri. In a statement released this Friday, the Houston-based company said it is looking for fresh investment while also being open to relinquishing control if a suitable buyer is found. No timetable was set, but it expressed confidence it could attract a buyer quickly and potentially conclude a deal this season.
The Guardian reports that Moelis & Company will handle any sale. The move follows a difficult end to the summer transfer window that drew criticism over the group’s long-term commitment to the Premier League club. Everton’s strategy shifted mid-window to a “sell-to-buy” approach, starting with the owner’s acceptance of a £40m offer from Nottingham Forest for Harrison Armstrong—before backlash led to that deal being halted. Iliman Ndiaye then left for Manchester City for £65m.
Off the pitch and on it, the summer chaos left Moyes short on options, including after Beto’s sale to Fiorentina and the collapse of Folarin Balogun’s proposed £40m move from Monaco. Moyes also said he had never spoken with Dan Friedkin, TFG’s founder and club chair, since returning as manager in January 2025. The group previously believed it could work around UEFA rules on multi-club ownership, but those plans don’t hold if Everton and Roma qualify for the same European competition.
