Tonda Eckert banned for six weeks over ‘spygate’ spying case
FA hands Tonda Eckert a suspended six-week ban plus a €33,000 fine after the ‘spygate’ probe.
Southampton have been hit by an FA disciplinary ruling involving Tonda Eckert. The manager was sanctioned for allowing the training sessions of three opponents to be observed last season. The decision came after a hearing, with a six-week suspension (suspended) and a €33,000 fine.
Eckert admitted he authorised spying on training sessions of Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. The FA charged him in July, and this Wednesday an independent regulatory commission finally delivered the punishment, per L’Équipe.
Southampton also already face penalties from the same ‘spygate’ affair: exclusion from the Championship play-off final and the deduction of four points this term. Eckert’s suspension won’t take effect until the end of the 2027-2028 season, meaning he will remain on the touchline for now. Next up, the Saints host Portsmouth this Sunday.
