Valencia must pick up points vs Athletic at Mestalla
Javier Aguirre’s side head to the game after three straight home losses: 0-1 vs Betis, 0-5 vs Barcelona and 2-3 vs Real Sociedad.
The Valencia host Athletic Club this Saturday at Mestalla needing points to avoid a fourth consecutive home defeat, which would set a new low for the club in a single league season.
Loses on the bounce in front of their own fans have already piled up: 0-1 to Real Betis, 0-5 against Barcelona, and 2-3 versus Real Sociedad. Carlos Corberán was in charge for the first two, while the most recent defeat came with Óscar Sánchez at the helm, coaching the reserve team.
Javier Aguirre’s first home match comes after his debut in Santander. A run of three straight defeats in the closing stretch dates back to March 2016, and there have been four other instances matching the current sequence. The only time Valencia managed four straight home losses was across 2015-16 and 2016-17, including setbacks to Villarreal, Real Sociedad, Las Palmas and Betis.
