Valencia part ways with head doctor Pedro López Mateu

Valencia has announced this Tuesday the end of its professional relationship with doctor Pedro López Mateu, head of the club’s medical department since 2019, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

In its statement, quoted by the same outlet, the club says López Mateu joined after more than twenty years in sports medicine and that until now he was responsible for the care and monitoring of both the men’s and women’s first teams, as well as the VCF Academy.

The club thanked him for “his dedication and professionalism over these years” and wished him “the best of luck in his professional future.” At the same time, it confirmed it is preparing a new structure for the department, meaning the medical set-up is changing after other recent moves in the sporting side.

This comes on the back of a poor start to the men’s team campaign. As Mundo Deportivo recalls, Valencia already made adjustments earlier: it dismissed coach Carlos Corberán, also parted ways with football CEO Ron Gourlay, and then appointed Braulio Vázquez as sporting director—changes that, the outlet adds, preceded this shift in the medical area.

From here, Valencia will implement that new structure for the health department, a crucial piece of work across a demanding season—covering physical-management needs for both the men’s and women’s teams and for player development in the youth system.
