Wamser sparks City comeback to earn draw at Bayern

Manchester City travelled to Uhlsport Park expecting a tough test and, despite going behind early, managed to rescue a point against Bayern München in the Women’s Champions League. According to The Guardian, José Barcala’s side conceded twice in the first half before turning it around, with goals from Beth Mead and late strike heroics from Carlotta Wamser to level the match.

From 2-0 down to level

Bayern set the tone quickly. With just 11 minutes on the clock, Giulia Gwinn broke the deadlock, cutting through after Linda Dallmann won the ball centrally and played her through to finish past Ayaka Yamashita. The lead then grew: Kerstin Casparij turned in a dangerous Harder cross for an own goal to make it 2-0.

Just before the break, City pulled one back in a controversial moment. As a flare burned on the pitch, play was allowed to continue after Casparij broke forward down the right. The ball eventually fell to a free Mead, who tapped home to make it 2-1.

The second half opened up more. The Guardian describes one big chance for Bayern when Fujino was fouled in the box, only for the goalkeeper to save the resulting penalty from Khadija Shaw. Barcala then reshaped his XI, with Mary Fowler replacing Shaw and Laura Blindkilde Brown moving into midfield.

Wamser’s late equaliser

While Bayern still looked threatening, the momentum shifted and City finally found a way through. With four minutes remaining, Wamser — signed from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer — produced the finish from the edge of the box to score on her return to Germany.

In the closing stages, Edna Imade had two late opportunities to win it for the hosts, but City held on. The Guardian notes City arrived unbeaten in their last 15 group-stage games, and Gwinn summed up the motivation after last season’s semi-final run, saying it left them “even hungrier and eager for more”. City’s next Women’s Champions League test is against Real Madrid next week in Manchester.
