Which clubs got the ‘inflated’ transfer fees from Man City?

From 2009 to 2018, City spent about £1.2bn on players and paid major transfer fees across Europe, including the Premier League.

BBC Sport traces where Manchester City’s transfer spending went during the period when it was ruled to have broken financial rules. The report points back to the independent commission’s finding of more than £900m in “inflated” accounts and to City’s outlay of roughly £1.2bn on players between 2009 and 2018 (around £900m net).

Where the money flowed

  • City paid transfer fees to senior-player clubs from summer 2009 to winter 2018, excluding free transfers, loans and academy graduates.
  • Just over a quarter of the total went to clubs in England’s top flight.
  • The study highlights signings from eight Premier League clubs and the same number from La Liga.

Big fees, mixed results

Wolfsburg immediately moved for winger Julian Draxler for about half the fee it received for Kevin de Bruyne in 2016, and then slid from second place to eighth in the Bundesliga before narrowly avoiding relegation in the following two seasons. Monaco also struggled after losing Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva the same summer, with Terence Kongolo and Keita Balde failing to replicate the team’s earlier success.

The BBC adds that some of the money reached clubs City didn’t deal with directly through sell-on clauses, including about £9m to Queens Park Rangers for Raheem Sterling’s 2015 move to City and roughly £7m to Barnsley for Everton’s John Stones transfer in 2016.
