Xabi Alonso backs Cole Palmer after England groin injury pullout

Cole Palmer missed England’s last four matches and has a groin problem, with Alonso expecting him to face Bournemouth on Saturday.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso insists Cole Palmer remains committed to playing for England despite the midfielder’s latest withdrawal. Palmer missed the last four England matches over the recent fortnight because of a problem linked to a groin injury.

Alonso said the 24-year-old was not available at the start of England’s Nations League campaign last month and added that the issue was visible during Chelsea’s defeat to Brentford. The Chelsea manager stressed that Palmer is now better, explaining that they have used the first two weeks of the international break to aid his recovery from what he described as pubalgia-related discomfort.

Fitness first for Palmer

Thomas Tuchel had not hidden his frustration when Palmer made himself unavailable for England, claiming the attacker “misses too many opportunities” and questioning whether he really wants to be in the squad. Palmer’s return is expected for Chelsea’s Saturday home game against Bournemouth.

Alonso also played down criticism from broadcaster Piers Morgan, who branded Palmer a “bottle job” over England non-appearances. Palmer has scored four goals for Chelsea this season, and the team need him at his best after three Premier League games without a win.
