Xabi Alonso credits the extended break as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 5-1

The Chelsea boss said the three-week international pause helped, pointing to Moisés Caicedo’s return after injury.

Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea returned from an extended international break with a 5-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, after three weeks away for the national teams. Ahead of kick-off, the club’s senior officials argued the pause arrived at the right moment to fine-tune things.

Before the shutdown, Chelsea had conceded 12 league goals and also suffered a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, underlining the need for changes. Alonso had been searching for answers after moving to a back three, and the approach against Bournemouth looked different: deeper defensive lines, a revised pressing structure and altered build-up play.

Caicedo’s comeback mattered

A major factor was the return of Moisés Caicedo. The Ecuadorian had played just 14 minutes as a substitute before Saturday, after a recurrence of a calf injury in a brief appearance versus Brighton. His calm in possession and ability to win the ball back made a visible difference.

João Pedro, who scored twice, said the break gave Chelsea the time to correct mistakes: “The international break was a long time. We had time to work, to fix the mistakes against Brentford, and we got a great result.”

Alonso was also effusive about Caicedo’s comeback: “Wow, I couldn’t wait to have him back to be honest because with Moi on the pitch everything looks more in place… It was very good news.” Joao Pedro returned as well, and Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha were named among the substitutes.

Tactical work during the pause

Asked about the three-week break, Alonso called it “too long”, but insisted Chelsea used the time properly, with analysis of matches, preparation for upcoming opponents and recovery for key players. Palmer, who pulled out of England duty, still played the full 90 minutes, and Chelsea’s fifth goal came from a free-kick routine devised by set-piece coach Austin MacPhee. There was also a blow: winger Jamie Gittens will miss “several weeks” with an ankle injury after an Under-21 appearance.
