Xabi Alonso pins Chelsea’s midfield on the Henderson-Caicedo pairing
With Reece James injured, Alonso trusts Henderson and Caicedo after the 5-1 win over Bournemouth; next up is Everton away
Chelsea have been forced to plan without Reece James after his knee injury, keeping the captain out “for the coming months”. With that blow, Xabi Alonso is leaning towards a new center-of-the-pitch base: Jordan Henderson and Moises Caicedo. Sky Sports reports the manager has been searching for a midfield solution, and the partnership that clicked last Saturday is now in the spotlight.
In the 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth, Caicedo stood out upon his return to the Chelsea XI, while Henderson was named player of the match. “They give presence,” Alonso said in his press conference, gesturing to his chest, before adding: “They give stability.” He also stressed that “for me, it’s fundamental that we get that area strong,” aware that Chelsea’s attacking momentum early in the season has been undermined by defensive vulnerability in open, end-to-end games.
So far, Alonso has rotated midfield options and pairings across his first six Premier League games. Now, with James sidelined, the Henderson-Caicedo duo looks like the partnership he wants to carry forward ahead of the next test: an Everton trip.
