Beşiktaş crushes Marseille and adds pressure on Genesio

Beşiktaş made an emphatic start in the Europa League league phase, and the result hits a Marseille side already under strain. In Istanbul, the French team fell 4-1 to Beşiktaş, led by Vincenzo Italiano, on the opening matchday—a setback that, according to Mundo Deportivo, increases uncertainty over Bruno Genesio’s future.

Europa League, matchday one

It began well for the home side: Ilhan Fakili put Beşiktaş ahead at 15 minutes with a low, angled shot. Marseille responded quickly and levelled through their youngster Keyliane Abdallah, who scored the 1-1 at the hour mark.

However, the second half swung the game completely. Marseille collapsed and conceded twice in under five minutes: Vaclav Cerny (56') and Amir Murillo (59') made it 3-1. Later, Ernest Poku (81') sealed the 4-1.

As Mundo Deportivo notes, Dusan Vlahović played the full 90 minutes for Beşiktaş but didn’t find the net.

Ligue 1 form and next fixtures

The wider picture isn’t any kinder: Marseille have lost their last three Ligue 1 matches and sit 13th with just three points. The timing couldn’t be worse, with another big test looming—the Sunday trip to face PSG at the Vélodrome, in Ligue 1’s fifth round.
