Celtic suffer another Europa League loss as Benfica win 4-1

Benfica led 3-0 at half-time and finished 4-1 in Lisbon; Celtic are still searching after two defeats in the league phase.

Celtic suffered another Europa League setback as Benfica beat them 4-1 in Lisbon. Martin O’Neill’s side showed more fight after the break, but Benfica’s early control—built on defensive mistakes—proved decisive.

Benfica took command before half-time, going in 3-0 up with goals from Jhon Duran (a double) and Alexander Bah. Camilo Duran pulled one back for Celtic, and Sky Sports also notes he had made his own way to Portugal after staying in Scotland for the birth of his child, before celebrating in the match.

Second-half fight, same ending

Vangelis Pavlidis wrapped up the scoring to seal a comprehensive Benfica win. The result leaves Celtic with two defeats from their first two Europa League games in the league phase, despite some encouragement going forward in the second half.
