Ferencvaros beat Celtic 3-1 to pile more misery on the Hoops

Celtic suffered yet another painful European night, losing at home as Ferencvarosi TC won 3-1 in the Europa League, according to The Guardian. The Scots’ issues looked familiar again, with the paper pointing to recurring defensive problems.

Another European lesson

The visitors struck first: Bamidele Yusuf put Ferencvaros ahead. Mika Baur levelled late in the first half, but the response was immediate. Kristoffer Zachariassen restored the lead quickly, before Daniel Arzani—scoring on his return to Celtic Park—made it 3-1 and wrapped up a strong outing for the Hungarian side.

Celtic coach Martin O’Neill blamed missed chances and costly moments. “We started off very brightly… we had a number of balls that were flashed across the goal and no one there to put the ball in the net for us,” he said. He added that the game turned after a poor concession and that they were “hit on the break” for the third goal. O’Neill also stressed the next steps: “We have seven games in which to try and get some points on the board… Tonight was, I think, a European lesson for us.”

Elsewhere, Juventus crushed NEC Nijmegen 5-0 at home, with two errors by goalkeeper Nikolas Polster contributing to the rout. Marseille followed a difficult run by going down 4-1 at Beşiktaş, after the Turkish side scored three unanswered goals in the second half.

The same opening slate also brought OFI Crete beating Hoffenheim 2-0 and Red Bull Salzburg winning 1-0 away to Levski Sofia in Bulgaria, as reported by The Guardian.
